43 pupils from Years 3 – 6 (and one from Year 2!) entertained a packed church with singing, dancing, drama and puppetry at last night’s annual B Factor Charity Talent Show. It was an opportunity for friends and families to come together to enjoy and showcase their talents. And, to round off a fantastic evening, the retiring collection raised nearly £250 for Sudan Crisis Appeal. Well done and thank you to all those who performed and supported! Please see the school Facebook page for lots more photos.

Buckholme Towers School B Factor Charity Talent Show 1

I’d like to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to those parents who have kindly given up their time to complete reviews of the school on Yell.com.

The fun and performances continued, this morning, when the brilliant Surya Arts brought their Surya’s Story to our Key Stage 2 pupils. It tells of a young girl in India who runs away from her job sewing footballs to join a march for children’s rights. Brilliantly told, with traditional music and dancing and plenty of opportunities for pupil participation. Once again, take a look at the videos on the school Facebook page!

Just to remind you that Miss Starkey will, once again, be running Busy Buddies Holiday Club through the Easter holidays. The appropriate forms are available to download on the school website.

After School Club will be in the Nursery classroom for the rest of term.

We are collecting Sainsbury’s vouchers for sports equipment.

Please also note that there is now a ‘Keeping Children Safe’ page on the school website dedicated to providing information for parents about safeguarding.

Please can I once again remind parents not to park on the yellow zig zags outside school; not only is it illegal, but it puts all of our children in danger. Please also do not park in front of the neighbours’ driveways as we value our generally happy relationship with them.

With Easter just around the corner, the ladies from the church have been busy knitting chicks again! These are available to purchase, with all proceeds going to the church charities, at a cost of £1.00 each. Prefects will be selling them at lunchtimes from Tuesday!

Dechox for The British Heart Foundation

Mrs Odhams and Mr Barham are currently completing the ‘dechox’ challenge for the British Heart Foundation for the whole of the month of March. Instead of asking for sponsors, they will be having a ‘guess how many sweets are in the jar’ competition. For those who would like to take part and donate, it will be two pounds for a guess and they will be able to do so after school in the lower playground on a Thursday and Friday. The winner at the end of the month of March will win the whole jar.

Well done to our Merit Winners this week! They are:

  • Reception – Cameron and William
  • Year 1 – Edward and Larissa
  • Year 2 – Jenson
  • Year 3 – Jake
  • Year 4JL – Libbie

Friday 3rd March 2017

I am very happy to inform you that Mr Lloyd Bartlett will be taking over from Mrs Stocken as Head of Music, after Easter. A number of you will already know Mr Bartlett as he currently teaches brass and clarinet in school. He is a very experienced music teacher and will not only be taking on the class teaching, but is also keen to run the orchestra, choir and recorder club!

On Tuesday, amidst a pageant of flag waving and Union Jack bowler hat wearing, Year 6 had the chance to 'pancake-race' each other and the clients of Poole Day Care Centre.  Rules were strictly adhered to and the competitive spirit was high as they sprinted along, stopping at two intervals to flip their pancake no less than three times!  What good ambassadors of Buckholme Towers they were, we are very proud of them.

It was great fun, but it was also a chance for Year 6 to mix with the elderly and spread a little of their youthful enthusiasm.  It is easy to overlook the impact that these kind of interactions have on our youth and also on our vulnerable elderly.  Mark, the Chaplain of PURC, was telling me a tale from a few years ago when an old man who had not walked or talked for some years, simply got up and talked to our children - incredible!

Mr Barham organised a corker of a World Book celebration this year. The children had to complete as many of the home reading-related tasks as possible during the week, then dress up on the day as their favourite book character, bringing with them their favourite book to share with a child in another class. Here a just a few of the photos…

As part of their Roman topic, both year 4 classes visited Dorchester museum on Tuesday. In the morning, split into groups, the children explored the Roman section of the museum, observed, identified and handled Roman artefacts and studied and designed mosaics. After lunch, the children learned about Roman town houses.......... by going to one! Only a five minute walk from the museum, the foundations of a large townhouse are left unveiled and the children enjoyed studying and identifying what the rooms were used for. As always, the children were impeccably behaved and engaged in all the learning. Hugo even entertained us with some classical music on the grand piano during the lunch break!

Friday 24th February 2017

This week we say goodbye to Mrs Buchanan. Monday will be her last day at Buckholme before she moves on to new opportunities and challenges. Mrs Buchanan has been with us for 3 years, working as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant across the school. She will be missed by all the children and staff. We wish her the very best of luck in her new venture.

Someone else who is soon to be embarking on new ventures is Mrs Stocken. She is going to be leaving us at the end of this term, after 17 years at Buckholme! Music has been enjoyed by hundreds of Buckholme pupils over the years and remains at the core of school life. Term on term Mrs Stocken has proved herself to be creative, talented and ultimately able to get the very best from our children. She will be greatly missed, but, of course, we wish her the very best of luck.

Year 1 treated us to a wonderful assembly, this morning, all about animals. They began with a rap, in French (yes, in French!), all about pets that they owned. They gave out leaflets that they had each produced, about how to look after your pet, they recited poetry, displayed art work and told us all about their trip to The New Forest Wildlife Park. Year 1 had clearly learnt a huge amount and had great fun doing it. Well done to all the children and to Mrs Odhams and Miss Tolman!

Staff have been reviewing testing and reporting dates for this term and agreed that in order to have achieved maximum coverage of the curriculum, testing week will now begin Monday 6th March. Reports will then come out to parents on 23rd and 24th March and Parent-Teacher meetings will be during the final week of term, beginning 27th March.

U9 Netball vs Park School

All the years 3 and 4 girls travelled to the Sir David English Sports Centre to play Park School in two High 5 netball matches. The girls played really well, passing and catching confidently and moving into positions around the court with purpose and speed. Nadia and Caitlin played particularly well, scoring all the BTS goals! We played two exciting and fun games, winning the A game 4-3 and the B one 2-1! Well done, everybody. A fantastic afternoon’s netball!

U11 Netball vs Park School

We took all the Yrs 5 and 6 girls to the Sir David English Sports Centre this week to play two netball matches against Park School. The girls’ passing and catching has become more confident and slick with every fixture played and again the girls were very much up for the challenge! Marking and intercepting has definitely improved, particularly from Jenna in the “A”s. Lara and Eszter were particularly determined and troublesome in defence for the “B”s. Alexa, Maddie H and Seren were on fine shooting form. The matches were fast, fun and close all the way through, with the “A” s losing 9-5 and the “B”s losing in the last quarter 5-3. Well done, girls, a really well contested and close couple of games with some great teamwork and support for each other!

I took 16 Years 5 and 6 boys to St Thomas Garnet School for a Tag Rugby match on Wednesday. Our boys were confident and determined and in the first match the opposition didn’t get much of a look-in. The final score was 6-1 to Buckholme. In the second match, St Thomas Garnet pulled out all the stops, but it was the turn of speed of players such as Brendan and our new boy, Callum, which proved just too much for them. Final score, 3-2 to Buckholme. I was thoroughly pleased with all the boys’ performances, and in particular with the abundance of muddy knees and red faces!

Due to rising costs, Ashley Cross Community Association have said that they are unable to support the May Day Extravaganza, this year. As a result, the PTFA have decided to bring it in-house, as it always used to be. The evening of Friday 16th June is the date, with lots of great, fun things planned, including a Harry Potter 20th Anniversary theme. Save the date!

Great to see so many children supporting Barnardo’s Hat Day - we raised £90.00! Here are a few of the best…

Year 3 treated us to a wonderful assembly, this morning, all about ‘Love’. They produced collages showing all the things they loved, shared poems about ‘Love’ and finished by singing ‘All you need is love’.

Buckholme Towers School - Love assembly

On Wednesday afternoon, our Year 5 and 6 boys met their corresponding year groups from Bournemouth Collegiate School for some rugby matches. All boys from both schools played passionately and with good form. The Year 6 game finished 11-7 to Buckholme, leading from the start. The Year 5 game was a tussle with BCS in the lead 7-6 at half time, and a full time score of 13-11 to Buckholme. Tough games and well fought for results they should be proud of. Well done all!

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed some fantastic workshops with Perform Drama, earlier this week. The theme was Fairy Tales and as you can see from the photos, the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Buckholme Towers School Fairy Tales themes

Years 1 and 2 also took part in a Design and Technology Challenge, to design and make a parachute. They were all tested (in the rain!) and achieved varying degrees of success. Very interesting was the discussion about how they would change and improve their designs, having witnessed a number of Compare Bears hitting the ground with some force!

Buckholme Towers School improving design project

Year 1 were extremely lucky to have dodged the rain at the New Forest Wildlife Park, yesterday. Clad in wellies and waterproofs they met all manner of British wildlife, the highlights being the owls and the otters. They were also able to investigate a variety of birds’ eggs, as well as meet some creatures which were previously extinct. A very exciting and, thankfully, dry day for Year 1!

U11s Netball vs Talbot House and Moyles Court

All our Year 5 and 6 girls travelled to Moyles Court School this week to play a three-way friendly fixture with the host School and Talbot House. We played Talbot House first. Our passing and movement was much sharper than last week and we strung some elegant and exciting attacks together, resulting in two confident goals from Alexa and two very near off-the-rim misses from Seren. We won quite comfortably 2-0. We then played the hosts, who with three very tall and able midcourt players, moved the ball very accurately and confidently about the court. Maddie H, Jenna and Eszter blocked and defended particularly well, but we were outmanoeuvred and lost 3-0. Well done, girls. A very enjoyable and successful afternoon. We even managed to dodge the rain clouds!

Friday 10th February is Barnardo’s Hat Day!

Hat Day is about encouraging children to dream big and be whoever they want to be. Here’s how to get involved:

1.  Ask your children what they’d like to do, or who they’d like to be when they grow up.

2.  Find or make a hat that represents their dream. There are no rules, no limits, anything goes!

3.  Encourage them to wear their hat to school on Friday 10 February 2017.

4.  Make a voluntary donation of (at least!) £1 to help support Barnardo’s.

Maybe your child wants to be a doctor, a singer, a teacher or a racing driver. Or maybe they dream of being a skateboarder, a wizard or an astronaut. The options are endless, and your child can choose any idea they like. By joining Hat Day your child is playing a vital role in supporting the UK’s most vulnerable children and their families. For 150 years, Barnardo’s has worked with children disadvantaged by a range of issues including poverty, disability and domestic violence. With your support, this could be a fun and worthwhile day.

Just to remind you that Miss Starkey will, once again, be running Busy Buddies Holiday Club this coming half term, and through the Easter holidays. The appropriate forms are available to download on the school website.

We have now confirmed that Stevenson’s will be the new school uniform supplier. Following the success enjoyed by some of our Year 6 pupils at the Bryanston School Maths Challenge, last week, six Year 4 pupils picked up the gauntlet last Friday afternoon. Again the competition was fierce, with around 30 schools taking part. Mr K said it was their calm but focussed approach to the challenge that led to such great results; 2nd (Vaughn and Emily), 7th (Edward and Anna) and 8th (Hugo and Nadia), with Buckholme coming 3rd overall. A fantastic effort, well done!

The Yr4 boys were over at Park school playing some tag rugby friendlies, this week. They showed determination and an excellent attitude, playing skilfully and as a team. They won both games, the first 7-5 and the second 4-1. Let's see more of that next week, year 4!

U11 Netball vs Talbot Heath

For their first game of the term, our u11 girls travelled to Talbot Heath. After a rather sleepy first quarter, our girls rallied well, defending, marking and moving the ball forwards with increasing confidence and skill. Ella, Jenna, Alexa and Maddie F all played a big part in the game, with Alexa scoring our only goal. We look forward to next week’s game against Moyles Court. A good team effort girls and a tasty tea!

Four intrepid Year 6 mathematicians journeyed to Bryanston school yesterday to take part in the inter-schools Maths Challenge. There were 27 schools in attendance, making it the largest event of its kind in the area. The challenges were organised in a fairly intense round-robin style, with everyone taking on each of the other schools.

Despite the pressure, Ramin and Lukas came in a very respectable 11th place, while Alexa and Mae were a little further down in 22nd. A fantastic first effort by all, well done!

Oh yes it is!
The whole school enjoyed Treehouse Theatre’s production of Peter Pan, this afternoon. It was great fun, as always, with a number of children being given parts, costumes and props. A big Thank You goes out to the PTFA for funding this fantastic event, once again.

Tom the drum teacher treated us to a very cool Drum assembly, this morning. The idea was not just to entertain, but to encourage more pupils to take it up. Right at the last minute Tom managed to persuade Rocco and William G to demonstrate their skills, which rounded off the assembly perfectly.

Just to remind you that Miss Starkey will, once again, be running Busy Buddies Holiday Club this coming half term, and through the Easter holidays. The appropriate forms are available to download on the school website.

Friday 6th January 2017

 Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are full of anticipation and excitement for 2017!

You should by now have received a copy of this term’s calendar via email, but if you would like a paper copy, please do tell Mrs Smith, so that she can print one for you. As always, we have a very busy term ahead!

I sincerely hope you have had a chance to enjoy the wonderful paintings that are now on display in the playground. It was Mrs Odhams who hatched the idea to brighten up the playground by having an art competition and displaying the winning pictures on the fence, above the planters. Each class was given a well-known painting by a famous artist on the theme of ‘flowers’, and the children asked to paint their own version of it. Everyone then voted and the favourite in each class was photographed, printed and displayed. Our thanks go to the PTFA who have kindly agreed to finance the project.

Friday 2nd December 2016

Christmas officially began yesterday when pupils from the junior school presented the Nativity. Recorder club opened the performance with their version of ‘Little Donkey’. It was narrated beautifully by members of Year 2, although all the children had key roles from the story, including our youngest nursery pupils, who were the ‘stars’ of the show.  All the children performed confidently and enthusiastically under the watchful and encouraging eye of Mrs Stocken. The retiring collection for the church charities raised £118.59, so thank you very much to all who contributed.

Please note that the Christmas Lunch is on Wednesday, not Tuesday as posted on the school calendar.

If you are seriously thinking about joining us on the school ski trip in March, you should know that flights from Bournemouth to Geneva are particularly cheap at the moment – I just paid £105 in total for return flights, with a bag, for Grace and I.

Catherine from Poole United Reformed Church visited the nursery to tell them all about Christingle. They learned about the different parts of the Christingle and what they mean. They talked about our beautiful world and Jesus being born at Christmas to be The Light of The World. They all made a Christingle to take home. They lit them and were able to see how the beautiful light lit up the darkness of the classroom.

Make sure you buy your Christmas Fayre raffle tickets, if only for the chance of winning Mrs Compston’s Gin House Experience for Two, worth £100!

Thank you to everyone who donated to Children in Need, we raised £137.48!

But, if you think that’s impressive, what about the £3100 that was raised at the PTFA Charity Ball?! Well done and thank you to our ‘main mums’ Mandy Johnson, Lana Bragg and Sam Upshall for putting on a fantastic evening. The feedback was excellent, once again, with everyone enjoying great food, great music and dancing and all with the satisfaction of knowing that the Poole and District Children’s Cancer Fund were over £3000 better off!

A number of our pupils performed for the school in our Musicians’ Assembly, this morning. We had cellists, a ukulele and violinists, one of whom was only in Year 1! It was a wonderful display of talent, from across the age range and a range of experience. Well done to Charlie, Hugo, Elsie, Libbie, Lukas, Humphrey and Freya!

Buckholme Towers School Musicians Asssembly

With our Christmas Fair next Friday afternoon, 3.15-5.30pm, we are making that day a Mufti Day for all the children. They should dress Christmassy (elves/Christmas jumpers etc) and as a ‘fine’ bring chocolate for the tombola (N-Y3) or a bottle (Yrs4-6)

The Yr 5, 6 A and B football teams met Park in some friendlies on Tuesday afternoon. After some strong play in the first halves, scores being 3-1 to park in the A team and 2-0 to Park in the B team. However, Buckholme buckled, losing by full time, having played determinedly right to the end.

We took all the Years 3 and 4 girls to Chapel Gate Sports Centre this week to play Park School at 6-a-side hockey. The surface there is excellent and the girls dribbled the ball really well. We had a number of really strong attacks and we tackled like demons! The “Brilliant Bs” lost by 2 goals, and the “Amazing As” drew 1-1 in a nail-biting finale! Special mention must be made of Nadia and Emily in attack and of Bronte and Caitlin in defence. Well done, girls – a fun and exciting afternoon out in the Autumn sunshine!

We took all the Years 5 and 6 girls to Littledown Sports Centre this week to play 8-a-side hockey against Park School. Dribbling and ball control has really come on well this term, as has our determination and strength in tackling. All the girls played with great spirit and heart but Park were just a little stronger than us in attack, winning by two goals. Special mention must be made of Alexa and Maddie F in attack and of Seren, Jenna, Izzy and Ella in defence. Well done girls, we really enjoyed ourselves!

Two football teams faced Park School on Wednesday. The A team did us proud, playing really well as a team and winning 5-2. The B team were only 1 goal down at half time with some great defending from William and running from Aryan, but conceded more as tiredness and the cold got to them.

In order to keep children safe in the mornings before school, we ask parents to walk round to the school office, rather than through the playground. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Year 6 treated us to a fun and informative assembly all about the Ancient Greeks, this morning. We learned about Greek Gods, about how Medusa turned those who looked at her to stone and about how the Spartans tricked the Trojans with a wooden horse and won the war. The assembly finished with the obligatory Greek dance to celebrate their win. Well done Year 6, Mr Barham and Miss Ericsson!

All the Years 5 and 6 boys played in two 6-a-side football matches at Poole Park this week against Park School. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and conditions were ideal! We played with real spirit and enthusiasm, putting together lots of exciting attacking moves and defended with real determination and resolve! Fortunately, lots of boys managed to earn a place on the score sheet: Harry, Ashley, Brendan, Ramin, Bertie, Humphrey and James. Fabulous effort, gentlemen! Special mention must be made of Oscar for his relentless energy and work rate and of Bertie for his vastly improved dribbling, tackling and wonderful goal! Well done, everyone. A fun and successful outing to “The Park” against “The Park”!

Most of the Year 3 and 4 pupils are away at Minstead Study Centre, this week, so it has been a little quieter around the school. Word is that they are having a fantastic time, exploring the wilds of the New Forest…

Buckholme Towers School Trip Minstead Study Centre

Year 5 assembly marked Remembrance Day perfectly. They managed to provide us with a very thought-provoking insight into what life might have been like for children and families during the war, while also drawing our attention to the meaning of this important day. We also observed a minute’s silence at 11.00am. Well done, Year 5, Mrs Hook and Miss Ericsson.

Buckholme Towers School Assembly

Year 5 had a very exciting day on Monday 7th November when they visited Holdenhurst Sewage Treatment works. On arrival, a rather unpleasant smell greeted them as they alighted from the minibus and they wondered what on earth they were going to be doing! They were shown into the classroom where Duncan, their guide for the day, recapped their learning on the water cycle, how water is collected and cleaned for drinking and how water is made “dirty”. They were rather shocked, but also amused, when he made sewage “soup” in front of them! The purpose of the visit was to learn how the sewage is cleaned to make it fit to be returned to the River Stour. The children were taken for a tour of the grounds, seeing at first hand the raw sewage coming in, the gratings collecting all the rubbish, leaves and other large objects, the primary settlement tanks, the tanks where microbes are eating the still-dirty water, seeing where the Ultra Violet rays are used to kill off any existing bacteria and finally seeing where the output was for the water to flow back into the River Stour. After lunch the children were fascinated to see the many bacteria contained in a single drop of water under a very powerful microscope. They were given details of microbes and had to work out what each one was called. After that the children did some experiments to find out where three samples of water had come from: rain, a swimming pool or the tap. They must have listened extremely well as each group were 100% correct! The day was rounded off with a quiz. Each of three groups did extremely well, but Charlie, James and Humphrey came out on top. An excellent educational visit, which was also great fun.

U9s Football vs Park School

All the Year 4 boys played in two 6-a-side “friendlies” against Park School this week at the old County Cricket Ground at Dean Park. Both matches were really evenly matched throughout, with the “A”s narrowly losing 2-1 and the “B”s losing 2-0. Well done to everybody for being so committed and persistent throughout. But well done, in particular, to Will Webster, for keeping his cool in attack and eventually managing to score such an impressive goal!

U11s Hockey vs BCS

The Years 5 and 6 girls took part in an 8-a-side hockey match against Bournemouth Collegiate School this week. The game was fast-paced and all the girls played well, with some spirited attacks and sterling defence. Our defence, in particular, was generally really solid, with only three momentary lapses leading to BCS goals! Special mention must be made of Izzy’s determined tackling and, most impressively, of Ava’s commitment and tenacity in defence – her very first hockey match! Very well done to all – a determined and promising performance!

We have had a number of parents saying they are interested in the School Ski Trip, taking place from 12th to 18th March 2017. We have been running this trip for over 10 years and every year it has been a fantastic success. At £725 (plus the cost of flights from Bournemouth) per person it offers great value – flights, transfers, food, lodging in a 3* hotel in the beautiful walled town of Aosta, ski school all day, all equipment hire and ski pass. It is a brilliant way to introduce the family to skiing, while also offering a good variety of quality skiing for the seasoned skier. We are at the stage where we need to be making a commitment to the ski company, so please do not hesitate to email me should you require any further information before booking.

STOP PRESS -------- Just a few tickets remaining for the Gatsby Ball on Friday 18th November, at The Italian Villa, Compton Acres. Welcome drink, 3 course meal, band, Roulette Table, Charity Auction and raffle, and all for £50 per head!--------------

We all enjoyed a great start to our day when Year 4DK presented ‘Doctor Sweet Tooth’. It was a tale of temptation and of the triumph (almost!) of good over evil. The assembly was great fun, brilliantly delivered and gave us all an opportunity to think about the risks around eating too much sugar. Well done 4DK, Mr Kaczmarek and Mrs Buchanan!

Year One had a fantastic time at the Priest House Museum on Tuesday, to start off our new topic ‘Homes then and now’. The children made an army of gingerbread men in a Victorian kitchen which were delicious. This was followed by scrubbing old smelly socks during a wash-day experience. After our snack we handled extremely old toys, discussing how they were made and how they worked. Finally, all the children had the opportunity to make their own peg dolls! We now have some very enthusiastic learners ready to find out a lot more about the past!

On Wednesday before half term, the year 5 and 6 boys went to face Park in some friendlies. By half time the A team game was 1-1 and the B team were down 3-0. However, by the end of the games the A team lost 4-2 and the B team had clawed back a goal, 3-1. Standout, proactive goalkeeping from Ramin. Well done boys. Playing with passion to the end.

We took all the Years 3 and 4 girls to Yarrells this week and played two hockey “friendlies”. All the girls got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Their skill levels, confidence and commitment increased impressively through the afternoon, with the “A”s winning 5-0 and the “B”s winning 2-1. A special well done to our goal scorers Elani, Nadia and Fleur! Great result girls!

Unable to use their pitch, all of our Year 5 and 6 girls had to travel to Canford School this week to play 9-a-side hockey vs Yarrells. Yarrells caught us napping in the first two minutes with two quick goals! However, we soon woke up and denied them any more goals at all! As the match progressed our skill levels, control and tackling improved dramatically. We dominated the middle part of the game, with numerous attacks on the Yarrells goal. However, we just couldn’t quite put the ball in the back of the net! A great effort, nevertheless, by all the girls. Very well done, indeed!

We all thoroughly enjoyed the Year 3 assembly, this morning. All about the ancient Egyptians, they wore some fantastic outfits, gave us fascinating facts and information and even performed a song (and dance!) and a poem about everything they’d learned. Well done, Year 3 and Mrs Harmon!

Thank you to all those parents, teachers and members of the PTFA who helped to make this year’s Spooks Party such a great success. There was a lovely atmosphere and some amazing costumes – check out the school Facebook page for more photos!

On Monday 10th October four children from Year 5 travelled to Ballard School to take part in a Year 5 Maths Challenge. 18 schools took part, each providing two teams with 2 players in each team. The teams had to undertake 6 challenges, each challenge lasting 8 minutes. Every challenge was of a different type and they included tangrams, time problems, mystery numbers, horizontal number ladders, finding values.

Our four team members, Charlie, Lara, James and Elsie were very excited and just a little bit nervous. However, they soon settled in and we could see that they were getting on with the tasks. After the 6 challenges were completed, the children had to answer a couple of questions then the papers were collected in to be marked. We all waited in anticipation! The first and second places were announced and unfortunately we were not amongst them, but during a wonderful tea provided by Ballard School, the teachers were handed the print-out of results; Charlie and Lara came 9th in their league and James and Elsie came 3rd in theirs. Many congratulations to them all. A great afternoon of mathematical fun!

And now, the sports reports from Mr Kaczmarek and Mr Caldwell:

On Tuesday afternoon the year 4 boys played football against Park school on their home ground. Our B team lost 3-1, but made pleasing progress in their game, thinking about their positioning and passing. The A team won 4-2 showing real team play, knowing when to keep possession and when to pass, thinking about their positioning, marking and chasing the ball down, all the way to the final whistle. Well done Buckholme boys!

All the Years 3 and 4 girls travelled to Chapel Gate, on Tuesday afternoon, for two fun 6-a-side “friendlies” with Park School. The general level of stick control was good, with some determined tackling and impressive dribbling from most of the girls. The “B”s, in particular, were keen to score, and finished with an exciting 4-4 tie. The “A”s lost narrowly 2-0, even though they had a number of good attacks at goal! Well done to all the girls – a really fun afternoon’s hockey with everyone getting involved!

Now is the time to buy your tickets for the Buckholme Towers Gatsby Ball. It takes place on November 18th at the Italian Villa, Compton Acres. Lots of parents are saying they are excited to be going, but we need you to commit with payment as soon as possible!

We have also had a number of parents saying they are interested in the School Ski Trip, taking place from 12th to 18th March 2017.

Year 1 provided an unexpected treat on Thursday when the whole school was invited to watch a fashion show of the fantastic T shirt designs they had created. They all strutted their stuff on the catwalk and even Miss Tolman and Mrs Odhams were persuaded to parade their designs!

Friday 14th October 2016

We all enjoyed a wonderful Harvest Festival at PURC, yesterday morning. It is the one performance in the school calendar where every pupil is on the same stage. Particularly pleasing was seeing our newest and our youngest pupils performing alongside their classmates - the smiles said it all! The retiring collection raised £203.80 for the church charities, thank you.

The year 4 football squad participated in a challenging 5-a-side tournament earlier in the week. Over the course of the afternoon, confidence grew, and the play improved considerably. Goal keepers Edward and Max saved some difficult shots and Hugo scored 3 goals in one 5-minute half! Even though the boys only drew and lost, they played well, with grit and determination. A great effort.

STOP PRESS ------------------We raised £98 for Global Make a Noise Day!-------------------------------

Year 4JL assembly, this morning, was all about being a Superhero. Superman was there, as was Wonder Woman, and even the Ghostbusters! In the end, we all agreed that although we don’t have superpowers, we all have special talents and skills that make us heroes in our own right. Well done Year 4JL, Miss Levine and Mrs Joiner!

The Macmillan Coffee Morning raised a fantastic £110.27, so thank you to everyone who contributed and thank you to the ladies of the PTFA for organising it.

Now is the time to buy your tickets for the Buckholme Towers Gatsby Ball. It takes place on November 18th at the Italian Villa, Compton Acres. Lots of parents are saying they are excited to be going, but we need you to commit with payment as soon as possible!

Don’t forget the Spooks Party next Friday evening from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. The children are allowed to come into school on the day in mufti, but the ‘fine’ for this is that Nursery – Year 3 donate chocolate, and Years 4-6 bring a bottle for the tombola. There will be games and stalls and everyone should dress spookily!

Please, please, please can parents not park on the yellow zig zags or across the neighbours’ driveways. We have had a number of complaints since the beginning of the new school year, more, in fact, than in any previous year. Not only does it contravene the Highway Code and cause significant anger and frustration for our neighbours (understandably!), but it is very dangerous. There are always spaces further down, just an extra few seconds away.

There are a number of second hand items of uniform now listed on the website ‘Grown Out of It’. If you are looking for items, please go to the site http://www.grownoutofit.co.uk and search Buckholme Towers.

Please note that we have spaces (Yr 3 upwards) for Netball Club on Thursdays and Sewing Club (Yr 2 upwards) on Tuesdays. Please also note that overalls are an essential part of the Buckholme school uniform.

Bournemouth Collegiate U11s Football Tournament

We were extremely lucky again with the weather this week and took eight boys to Bournemouth Collegiate School’s U11s 6-a-side Football Tournament. We had a fantastic day with the fifteen other teams and were pitted against some pretty skilful opposition. However, we were up for the challenge! Our first game was against the mighty Dumpton, who in fact went on to win the whole competition! We started really strongly and didn’t allow Dumpton to put us on the back foot. Brendan and Dan were very busy and committed up front, Charlie and Ramin were solid in defence. Star of the game, however, was Rocco, who played an absolute “blinder” in goal, saving some amazing shots – his reactions were razor-sharp! We eventually lost 1-0, but it could easily have been 5-0! Our second game was against Ballard. It was nip and tuck the whole way through, both teams putting together some exciting attacks. Harry scored a sizzler of a goal, but we lost again, narrowly, 2-1. Our third pool game was against Yarrells. Once again, we attacked well and defended like Trojans, losing 2-0. We were drawn against Park U11As in the plate quarter-finals and really outplayed them, winning a thrilling end-to-ender 3-2, with fabulous goals from Dan, Brendan and Ashley! We were on a roll! Our plate semi-final game was against Hampshire Collegiate School. Once again, all the boys more than stepped up to the mark, with some amazing defending from Charlie and Ramin and some great attacks from Dan, Harry and Brendan. Harry again scored our goal. The full-time score was 1-1. The extra time score was still 1-1. No – not a penalty shoot-out?! Stay calm everyone!! Parents and Coach could barely watch! 1-1,2-2, 3-3, 4-4 – still evens! To the wire…! We sadly lost 5-4 in the end! Full credit to ALL eight boys for really stepping up and delivering quality football. Mums and dads and staff were extremely proud of your performances and behaviour. Very well done, indeed!!

Well done to our Merit Winners this week! They are:

Reception –  Theo

Year 1 – Zara

Year 2 – Harriet

Year 3 – Bronte

Friday 30th September 2016

This morning’s Year 2 assembly was full of fascinating facts and information all about Brownsea Island. The children spoke out confidently and clearly and had obviously thoroughly enjoyed the topic and their visit to the island. Well done Year 2, Mrs Newman and Miss Starkey.

All parents should now have received information about our Open Evening, this Monday, between 5 and 7pm. This is an opportunity for current parents to come into school and see, first-hand, some of the work that the children have been doing since the beginning of the new school year. We will also be welcoming prospective parents into school so that they can experience a taste of everything our wonderful school has to offer. There will be a number of activities going on around school for parents and children to join in with.

We are sad to be saying goodbye to Miss Starkey, today, as she moves on to pastures new. She has been a wonderful addition to the team over the last few years and we all wish her the very best of luck in her future endeavours.

Please, please, please can parents not park on the yellow zig zags or across the neighbours’ driveways. We have had a number of complaints since the beginning of the new school year, more in fact, than in any previous year. Under 9s Football Tournament at Bournemouth Collegiate School

We took most of the Year 4 boys to Bournemouth Collegiate School’s Under 9s Football Tournament this week. The weather was kind and perfect for soccer. We tackled, passed and pushed forwards really well in all four games, in fact conceding only one goal, drawing 0-0 against BCS, narrowly losing 1-0 against Walhampton and beating Yarrells 1-0! We only scored one goal, but had numerous shots in the direction of the goal! We came 2nd in our group and deservedly went through to the Cup, not the Plate, quarter finals, out-doing even the mighty Dumpton! Sadly, having fought well all afternoon, our run ended there. However, all the boys played extremely well and can be very proud of their endeavours and achievements during the afternoon! Special mention must be made of Will Webster, for his determination in attack and of Edward Bailey, for his fantastic defending and energetic attacks! Well done everybody!

Well done to our Merit Winners this week! They are:

Reception –  Cameron

Year 1 – William T

Year 2 – Connie

Year 3 – Jack

Year 4JL – Eddie

Year 4K - Vaughn

Councillor Xena Dion, the 768th Mayor of Poole, visited school this morning, to lead a whole school assembly. She talked about the role of the mayor and reminisced about her days at a very similar school to Buckholme – she even tried one of the girl’s boaters on! After the assembly, Seren and Ashley, our Head Girl and Head Boy, were on hand to take the mayor on a tour of the school. Go to the Buckholme Towers Facebook page to see the photos!

 Moyles Court U11s Football Tournament

We were blessed with fabulous weather for this year’s tournament and although we were a relatively young and inexperienced, compared to the other teams, we were in good spirits and up for the challenge! We played four games in total and improved steadily throughout the day. We lost our first game, narrowly, 1-0, against Park School. We then drew 1-1 in a nail-biting thriller against Talbot House, with a sizzling goal from Brendan. Against a very strong and skilful St James side, we managed to hold them to a 2-0 loss – every other school in our group lost at least 5-0 to them! Our final game of the day was against our hosts, Moyles Court. It was a very evenly balanced game – we lost 1-0 in the dying seconds! All the boys really enjoyed themselves and gave their full commitment to every game. Possession was generally good, tackling strong and there was real intent in attack! James was a star in goal, Charlie was a rock in defence and Brendan, Dan and Harry were persistent and forceful in attack! Well done, boys. A fantastic team effort and a fabulous afternoon’s football!

Well done to our Merit Winners this week! They are:

Uniform – It has come to my attention that a number of girls (in particular) are not wearing their hats. All girls in Years R – 5 should be wearing a school hat. Boys up to and including Year 2 should wear a school cap. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this matter. Finally, Astroturf boots are an acceptable alternative to football boots.

Headmaster's Newsletter No. 206

Friday 16th September 2016

Welcome back to the new school year!

Having spoken to many of the children, it sounds like a number of our families enjoyed some wonderful adventures during the summer break. It’s lovely to see everyone happy and rested!

We always have plenty to celebrate at Buckholme Towers, but I think our 2016 SATs scores deserve a special mention. While the national average across the 3 subjects (Maths, English and Spelling/Punctuation/Grammar) for achieving the required standard sat at 53%, our average was 86% - a fantastic achievement by our pupils and staff, particularly when you consider the lack of time they were given to prepare for these brand new tests.

Please visit the new school website! Hopefully you will find it friendly, informative and easy to use – we welcome your feedback.
We would also welcome your feedback on the website ‘Grown out of it’, where you can buy and sell school uniform and other school equipment.

You should, by now, have met with your child’s class teacher and have all the information you need to support them during this school year. If you were unable to get to the ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions, then please make an appointment to catch up with them as soon as possible.

Nits are back! Please check your child’s hair and treat if necessary.

PTFA News
I am hoping you will have noticed the improvements we have made to our outside area during the school holidays. Thanks to the PTFA and your fantastic support during the last year, each class now has a wonderful Planter that they can ‘get creative’ with. Also, the sheds have gone and we have our beautifully clad container, again ready for the children to make their own. With further support from the trustees of Buckholme Towers School Ltd, we have also been able to finally have the football pitch astroturf’d, something which caused great excitement on the first morning. All of this is work in progress though, and it will be the pupils who decide how we further improve these new facilities, going forward.

Have your bought your ticket for the PTFA Gatsby Ball on Friday 18th November? If you have a special prize you’d like to donate to the raffle (proceeds to the named charities and PTFA funds), or you’d like to sponsor this event, then please let us know. It promises to be a great night!

If you would like to get involved, maybe by becoming a class rep, then please contact Peter and Mandy by emailing buckholmeptfa@gmail.com

Headmaster’s Newsletter NO 205

Friday 1st July 2016

Firstly, can I ask that any parents who are unsure about Summer Snapshots arrangements (Yrs3-6), for either the rehearsal at Canford on Wednesday or the performance on Thursday evening, please contact Mrs Smith, in the office. The same goes for Speech Day, next Friday morning, 8th July, at The Hamworthy Club (Rec-Yr6). I know there has been a lot of communication recently. Thank you.

Nursery assembly, this morning, was all about ‘things that move’. They sang and danced and showed us their fantastic junk model rockets. They spoke out confidently and enthusiastically, finishing up with a retelling of ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’, with all the actions. Well done, Nursery, Mrs Giordano and Miss Lloyd!

Dorset Schools’ Sailing Regatta June 2016

This week we took a dozen of our keenest sailors to The Dorset Schools’ Sailing Regatta, held at Poole Park and kindly supported and run by Rockley Adventure. Eight schools took part, with the children racing in pairs in Laser Picos. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and a gentle to fresh south-westerly was ideal for most of the children. It was a really sociable and fun day, with the children not only competing very competently, but also enjoying a picnic, pedalos and giant paddle boards when they weren’t racing! Alex and Lily sailed fantastically well, earning themselves a silver medal in the “Elite Sailors” class. Special mention must also be made of Dan and George, coming 6th and 7th out of 12 in their races, Charlie and James, coming 6th and 9th in their races, and of Will Webster, one of the youngest sailors, who impressed with his consistently good helming and bone dry sailing cap at the end of the afternoon! Will held his steely nerve well, whilst many of the other boats were capsizing around him, due to the slightly gusty conditions!

A really fantastic day on the water for everyone. Well done team!
Very many thanks to Rockley for giving us such an opportunity and for making it all happen!!

Year 6 are once again involved in raising funds for the church and will be setting up stalls at the end of each day during next week. Please support them!

Sports Day was an absolute corker again, this year. The weather held (just about!) long enough for all the children to compete in at least 2 races each. It was great fun, while also being very competitive. The big race of the day, the House Relay, was very exciting and won by Sandbanks, while the overall winners, this year, were Studland!

The Italian-themed PTFA quiz night was equally competitive and equally exciting. Well done to the eventual winners, Team Ol’ Blighty’

Lots of parents have already signed up to the new lunches for September. The menus are on a 3 week rolling basis and are available to view on the school website, under ‘Useful Forms’.

And talking of the school website, I am very excited to announce that the new one is almost ready to be launched! Watch this space...

Dates for your diary

Wednesday 6th July – Summer Snapshots rehearsal at Canford School Thursday 7th July – Summer Snapshots concert – Buy your tickets now! Friday 8th July - School Speech Day and Prize Giving
Friday 16th September – PTFA Beach BBQ, Sandbanks

If you would like to donate a prize to the Summer Snapshots raffle, it will be gratefully received by Mrs Smith in the office!

Please note that all clubs and activities, apart from Art Club, have now finished for the term.

Finally, this is my last newsletter of the school year (I can’t believe it!), so with that in mind, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our families, for their support in helping us to make Buckholme Towers the best school it can possibly be for our children. For me personally, it is a milestone, as Grace leaves Buckholme at the end of term. That will take some adjustment, but only on my part, as she is raring to go, in so many ways.

Have a great summer, take care, and I’ll see you on the beach!
