OFSTED ACTION PLAN

In consultation with staff, Mrs Darvill and I have created an action plan which clearly defines our aims for tackling the areas for improvement outlined by OFSTED. To view our action plan, please go to the school website – Resources for Parents – Ofsted Report – OFSTED Action Plan. We will update the action plan as objectives are met and the impact measured. You will see from the timescales, that a number of the actions are already underway.

Year 1 wowed us this morning with their knowledge of the Galapagos islands and their fascinating inhabitants. Based around the life of Charles Darwin, they set sail on a voyage of discovery, music and poetry. They spoke confidently and it was obvious that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Well done Year 1, Mrs Odhams and Miss Tolman!

French day was fantastic, yesterday. The French theme permeated through all the day’s activities, the highlights being the French feast and the parade and outfit competition. William in Y1 won the Junior school prize, while Callum won the senior school prize. Merci to our resident French expert, Miss Levine, for organising what was a lovely day.

Dorset Schools Sailing Regatta 2017

We took a dozen keen sailors from our Years 4 to 6 classes to the annual Dorset Schools’ Sailing Regatta at Poole Park this week, which is very kindly organised and provided by Rockley Watersports for free. This year the event was more popular than ever, with a record twelve local state and independent schools entering. Traditionally we’ve done very well at this event, with many of the Buckholme children and parents being keen and sailing regularly with local clubs. This year, sadly, however, there was virtually no wind at all for the majority of the day and dark brooding drizzle clouds hovered and sometimes even rudely drizzled! Well, a Sailing Regatta with no wind?! AJ, the chief organiser, was not to be outdone by the weather, and we resorted to “Plan B” - double kayak racing! Theo and Will G did fantastically well, coming second in their heat of twelve. Will W and Connor performed even better, coming first in their heat of twelve. We also gained two fourths and a fifth place.  Fantastic! When the children weren’t competing they were free to use the stand-up paddle boards and pedalos – a lot of fun! The wind did pick up marginally over lunch, rising to a light zephyr, but we were all introduced to a new up-an-coming sport for the afternoon racing – sail paddling, which consists of a fully rigged Pico being helmed round a triangular course by one member of the crew, with the other paddling with all their might kneeling over the bow! I know which half of the team I’d rather be! We nearly managed to make it through the awards ceremony without more drizzling. However, we still managed to have a lot of fun, despite the weather and chilly temperatures! Many thanks to Rockley for the opportunity, the parents for their support and to all the children for their good behaviour, positive attitudes and resilience! Well done, everybody. A great team effort!!

Miss Starkey would like to remind parents about the upcoming Busy Buddies holiday club. We have lots planned from trips to Forest School every Tuesday afternoon (don't forget those welly boots if you are attending), creating your own beautiful tea light holders, picnics in Ashley Cross, making our own movies, ice creams down at Poole Park and much, much more! We kindly ask parents to book before 7th July as spaces are starting to run short due to the tight adult:pupil ratios we operate. The form can be found under the holiday club section on our website. We can't wait to see everyone!

Please note the change to the girls’ summer uniform - summer dresses are to be worn by all girls during the summer term. Summer uniform is optional during the first half of the Michaelmas term.

Tickets are on sale for our fantastic end of year show. All the pupils in Years 3 to 6 are taking part in The Blue Crystal, a sci-fi adventure set 2000 years in the future, packed with a variety of characters, catchy songs and plenty of humour! It takes place on 6th July at 6.45pm in the Layard Theatre at Canford School, and all are welcome. Tickets can be purchased from the school office.

A number of children in school have lost grandparents to cancer over the course of the last year and so the girls in Year 5 have decided to run a cake sale in aid of Macmillan after school on Tuesday 9th July. Make sure you have some change in your pocket on that day!

Please note that clubs and activities finish today.

Next term’s hot lunch menus are now on the school website. If you would like to sign up for hot meals, then please let Mrs Smith know before Monday 3rd July.

The PTFA are planning a second hand uniform sale from 3.00pm on Thursday 6th July, in the lower playground. If you have current uniform to sell then please drop it into the school office on the morning of 6th July, where the ladies of the PTFA can collect it.

Through their amazing hard work and creativity, the PTFA have accrued a pot of money to take forward into the new school year. If you have any suggestions about how the money could be spent, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Year 2 presented a fantastic assembly all about chocolate, this morning. They told the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, complete with Oompa Loompas, doing the Oompa Loompa song. They also gave us the history of chocolate and told us how chocolate is made – great costumes, great acting and great fun. Well done, Year2 and Mrs Newman!

Unable to meet the rising costs of putting on the annual May Day Extravaganza, the PTFA decided to organise a summer fayre in-house, this year. It was lovely to see so many of you there last Friday for what turned out to be a fantastic event. A number of parents commented on the lovely relaxed atmosphere and what a great idea the Harry Potter theme was. A huge thank you must go to the ladies and gents of the PTFA and to all the parents who gave up their time to organise, set up and run the event.

 PS U11 Rounders Tournament

All the U11 girls travelled to Dean Park this week for the PS U11 Rounders Tournament. The girls fared incredibly well, considering the high temperature, drawing with Park, and losing very narrowly by 1 rounder to two very strong MC and St T G teams. The team’s fielding was very sharp. Jenna was excellent and consistent with her bowling. Ella was reliable and alert as back stop. Very well done, girls. An exciting and very creditable end to the rounders season!

Year 4 had a lovely day at Upton Country Park, on Monday. They spent the morning in the woods looking at and researching habitats. After some rounders and cricket at lunchtime, they met Andy Goldsworthy, a local artist who specialises in using nature to create art.
