Friday 23rd June 2017

Year 2 presented a fantastic assembly all about chocolate, this morning. They told the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, complete with Oompa Loompas, doing the Oompa Loompa song. They also gave us the history of chocolate and told us how chocolate is made – great costumes, great acting and great fun. Well done, Year2 and Mrs Newman!

Unable to meet the rising costs of putting on the annual May Day Extravaganza, the PTFA decided to organise a summer fayre in-house, this year. It was lovely to see so many of you there last Friday for what turned out to be a fantastic event. A number of parents commented on the lovely relaxed atmosphere and what a great idea the Harry Potter theme was. A huge thank you must go to the ladies and gents of the PTFA and to all the parents who gave up their time to organise, set up and run the event.

 PS U11 Rounders Tournament

All the U11 girls travelled to Dean Park this week for the PS U11 Rounders Tournament. The girls fared incredibly well, considering the high temperature, drawing with Park, and losing very narrowly by 1 rounder to two very strong MC and St T G teams. The team’s fielding was very sharp. Jenna was excellent and consistent with her bowling. Ella was reliable and alert as back stop. Very well done, girls. An exciting and very creditable end to the rounders season!

Year 4 had a lovely day at Upton Country Park, on Monday. They spent the morning in the woods looking at and researching habitats. After some rounders and cricket at lunchtime, they met Andy Goldsworthy, a local artist who specialises in using nature to create art.

Next term’s hot lunch menus are now on the school website. If you would like to sign up for hot meals, then please let Mrs Smith know before Friday 30th June.

Years 5 and 6 played a cricket friendly against The Park at Poole Park, on Wednesday. The A team lost narrowly, 272 to 243, while the B Team won, 234 to 203. The weather was fantastic as was the bowling from Oscar. Rocco stood out as Mr Motivator, really supporting and driving the teams. A great effort by the whole team, well done!

The PTFA are planning a second hand uniform sale from 3.00pm on Thursday 6th July, in the lower playground. If you have current uniform to sell then please drop it into the school office on the morning of 6th July, where the ladies of the PTFA can collect it.

There are just 7 days left to claim your 20% off the cost of school photos. Your individual log ins were sent out on the day of the photos in your child’s book bag. If your child was absent on the day, they will have their photo taken when DE Photo come back to do the whole school photo (date tbc).

Firstly, some reminders about our Harry Potter-themed Summer Fayre next Friday evening in school. Friday is a mufti day and the forfeit is that all the children need to bring chocolate for the tombola (no bottles this year). Don’t forget to bring your Harry Potter hats for the Sorting Hat competition, and, of course, there will be a Fancy Dress parade!

Year 5 treated us to a lovely assembly this morning, an abridged telling of the story of Oliver Twist. The acting was fantastic, the songs were great and the costumes perfect!

Buckholme Towers School Oliver Twist

We must say a huge thank you to Scott and Natalie who have, once again, given up their time to support Camo Day. It rates as one of the best fundraising days of the year and is in aid of the forces charity SSAFA.

Buckholme Towers School Cameo Day

More Thank You’s must go to Emily and Nadia in Year 4 for their excellent interviewing techniques. Emily had the idea to give our new Head, Mrs Ruth Darvill, a good grilling at the Open Evening on Monday. They asked all the key questions on everyone’s lips, including ‘Will you give out detentions if someone gets 3 demerits?’ and ‘Will you allow Fidget Spinners?’.  Mrs Darvill was most impressed with the way the girls conducted themselves. Well done Emily and Nadia.

On the subject of the Open Evening, I’d like to say still more Thank You’s to the ladies of the PTFA who helped with teas and coffees, Mandy Johnson and Lana Bragg, and to Sam Upshall and her daughter Grace for setting up a Ski Trip stand, complete with helmet and photos from recent trips. Thank you also to all those parents and pupils who attended.

U11 Rounders vs Park School

All our Years 5 and 6 girls travelled to Dean Park this week to play two games of rounders with Park School. Our bowling, fielding, batting and tactics were much improved. We lost the first game narrowly 8 ½ - 6 ½ and sneaked a half rounder victory on the last ball for the second, winning 3 ½ - 3! Very well done, girls. A really fun and exciting couple of games!

Just before half term Year One visited Corfe Castle. They had a lovely tour around the castle led by a lady from the National Trust. She was particularly impressed with how much Year One knew already, claiming they were one of her ‘best ever’ groups of five and six-year-old children for Historical knowledge! Once they had finished their tour they had a picnic and made sketches of the keep. After that they walked along to the Corfe Castle Model Village which has a small scale replica of what the castle used to look like. They thoroughly enjoyed completing Mrs Odhams ‘Model village quiz’ before playing in the wild woods and gardens. As expected, the trip greatly enhanced their learning and Year One are still talking about it a week later!

Well done to all our musicians who entertained us and showed off their fantastic skills in this morning’s assembly – it was a thoroughly enjoyable start to the day. And thank you to Mr Bartlett for organising it.

If you follow Buckholme on Facebook, you’ll know that our Year 5 and 6 classes have been at Osmington Bay activity centre all week (gosh, it’s been quiet around school!). Here’s a little taste of what they have been up to…

Year 2 have been very busy this week with their Design and Technology challenge.  The aim was to design and build a boat. The boats were then tested (in some cases to destruction!) and their designs evaluated. There were some weird and wonderful designs, with some more seaworthy than others – one was even elastic band-powered!

This morning Year 1 enjoyed a lovely walk to the park and around the local area to find and identify wild and garden plants. It’s amazing the beauty you can find on your doorstep – who needs the Chelsea Flower Show?!

Thank you for your support with new gate arrangements, they seem to be working very effectively. Please note that Miss Hamblin is very happy to take messages at the gate and pass them on to the appropriate member of staff.

I hope you have all put the date of June 5th in your diaries; between 5 and 7pm we have our Open Evening, which, as well as providing the perfect opportunity to see our school at its best and to view your children’s work, will also be your first chance to meet our new Headteacher, Mrs Ruth Darvill.

We will, once again, be holding Camo Day, on Friday 9th June. This is a great fun day where the children complete an assault course set up in the playground by Scott and Natalie from Blast Sports. Some of the money raised will be given to the school council to spend on playtime equipment, the rest will be donated to the forces charity SSAFA. Sponsor forms are on their way to you

We are collecting Sainsbury’s vouchers for sports equipment.

I’d like to start by saying how impressed I was with the way that the pupils conducted themselves during the inspection. They were polite, well behaved, engaging and just, well, the wonderful children that we know they are! The inspection report will be published in the next 2-3 weeks.

Y4DK treated us to a thoroughly enjoyable assembly, this morning. They performed a traditional tale of good triumphing over evil, about two daughters, with girls dressed as boys and boys dressed as girls, and finished by singing their own version of Hey Soul Sister. Oh, and there were laughing trees in it too! They spoke (and sang) confidently and had clearly enjoyed studying the topic – the twist was that the audience were able to choose the ending. Unsurprisingly, everyone voted for the gruesome ending, which was like something out of a Tarantino movie. Well done, 4DK and Mr K!

Firstly, can I say thank you for your support and understanding while we have implemented changes to our dropping off and picking up procedures. I am aware that there have been one or two teething problems but that generally the new procedures have worked well. Can I assure you that this is not simply about keeping parents out of school, it is about keeping the children safe, while trying to maintain a friendly and welcoming environment. Please note that a bell has been installed in the front porch which will summon staff from Early Bird Club and Nursery, between 8 and 8.30am.

Please remember that we have school photographs on Monday, so all pupils should be in full school uniform.

Match Reports:

The year 5 and 6 boys met with YPS to play Quick Cricket at Upton Rec, on Wednesday. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and much was learnt by all the pupils, regarding positioning, the rules of overs and bowling, fielding skills and teamwork. Brendan deserves a particular mention for his strong bowling. Well done.   Mr K.

All the Years 5 and 6 girls played MCS at Poole Park this week, their first match of the summer season. Everyone contributed very positively, with accurate bowling and fielding, and determined batting. Jenna and Ella played particularly well, with great focus and an increasingly competitive edge. The game was exciting and dynamic to watch, ending in a fair 12-12 draw! Well done, girls, a great start to the season!   Mr Caldwell.

Just to remind you that Miss Starkey will, once again, be running Busy Buddies Holiday Club through Whitsun half term and the summer holidays. The appropriate booking forms are available to download on the school website.

Also, she has asked me to mention that she needs donations of glass jars and children’s old welly boots, no bigger than adult size 2.

Headmaster’s Newsletter No. 229

Tuesday 9th May 2017

Following the last Newsletter where I outlined new arrangements for keeping our children safe, I can now share information regarding arrangements for dropping children off between 8am and 8.30am. We have agreed that having the main gate open from 8am leaves the school ‘vulnerable’ and therefore from Monday it will not open until 8.30am when there is a teacher on duty at the small gate. Parents dropping their children off for Nursery will come to the front door of the main building where they will be met by a member of the nursery staff. Early Bird Club children will also come to the front door where they will be met by Mrs Fox. Acro Club parents will do the same. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding while we trial these new arrangements.

It's been a busy week! Year 4 had a visit from a real-life Roman Soldier expert (and boy, were they put through their paces – ready to invade at a moment’s notice!), and all the children have been planting in their class planters…

Headmaster’s Newsletter No. 228

Friday 28th April 2017

Welcome back! I do hope you all enjoyed a break and managed to make the most of the sunshine during the Easter holidays.

The challenge of balancing our children’s safety against keeping our school accessible and friendly is sometimes a difficult one. But, with the safety of our children being the highest priority we need to ensure that anyone visiting our school is either vetted or closely monitored. To this end, we are tightening up on the security around school. For example, we are asking parents not to come up through the playground in the mornings and enter the school building, but to go round the outside to the office. Visitors to the front door will be asked to wait in the porch until a member of staff is able to meet them and let them in – they will now not be ‘buzzed in’ and asked to wait on the sofa, even if they are known to Mrs Smith. Visitors will also be challenged by staff if they are unknown to them. I would appreciate your cooperation in all of these matters and would ask for your understanding if and when a member of staff approaches you or denies you access to the school at any stage.

And now some great news about our friends at Life Works; their hard work paid off and they won the area People’s Projects award, earning themselves some significant funding. They have asked me to pass on their sincerest thanks to everyone who voted them!

Please can I once again remind parents not to park on the yellow zig zags outside school, or even pull up on them; not only is it illegal, but it puts all of our children in danger. Please also do not park in front of the neighbours’ driveways as we value our generally happy relationship with them.

It is now a year since we received your completed Parent Questionnaires, so I thought I would update you on where we are with some of the key findings from that survey. Around 60% of our families returned a questionnaire.

Headmaster’s Newsletter No. 227

Friday 31st March 2017

Huge thanks go to the ladies of the PTFA and those parents who helped create the Mother’s Day gifts last Friday; in particular, Lucy Mains, Ruth Webster, Penny Penman, Helen Hill and her mother! It made the whole process so much easier having the extra hands on board.

Our friends at Life Works are up for a significant lottery Fund award, but they need our votes!

The Life Works chaps, from the Parkstone United Reform Church, have helped us with a number of projects around school, like the cladding of the container and the construction of the planters, so let’s give them the best possible chance of winning by clicking on the link below and casting our votes in their favour!

Here’s a little taste of some of the things that have been going on in school this week (beware, seriousness cuteness alert)..…

Just to remind you that Miss Starkey will, once again, be running Busy Buddies Holiday Club through the Easter holidays. The appropriate forms are available to download on the school website. Some days are now full!

We are collecting Sainsbury’s vouchers for sports equipment.

Please also note that there is now a ‘Keeping Children Safe’ page on the school website dedicated to providing information for parents about safeguarding.

Please can I once again remind parents not to park on the yellow zig zags outside school; not only is it illegal, but it puts all of our children in danger. Please also do not park in front of the neighbours’ driveways as we value our generally happy relationship with them.

Dechox for The British Heart Foundation

Mrs Odhams and Mr Barham have now completed the ‘dechox’ challenge for the British Heart Foundation. Mrs Hussey guessed the exact number of sweets in the staff jar (inside job?!) and William in Y4 won the school jar, and shared them with his friends. Mrs O and Mr B raised over £100, thank you to all those who supported!

Parkstone United Reform Church are, once again, asking for donations of Easter Eggs to go to the needy in Poole. If you’d like to donate, then please drop your eggs into the school office next week (mornings only).
